WordPress Installation Tutorial

WordPress Installation Tutorial

WordPress is one of the most popular Content Management Systems. Today we’ll be learning how to install it de novo, without headaches.

Assuming that you already have a domain name and a server, the first thing you have to do is downloading the latest version of WordPress from here. Cool. You have all the CMS files in an archive. Please note that if you have cPanel and Fantastico, this step is nonsense; you can install WordPress directly from Fantastico. For users with no Fantastico option on their server, the archive should be uploaded in the HTML public directory. Extract all the files in the similar folder, then move them all in the HTML public directory and delete the main archive and the main WordPress folder.

Make a database with your local software delivered by the hosting company. In cPanel, go to the MySQL section and create a new database with your preferred name, a new user, then assign to user to the database, offering all privileges. Note the password, database and user names, you will need them.

In HTML public directory, spot the file named config-simple.php. Open it and insert the info for database, user, password in the brackets. Save the file, then rename it to config.php.

WordPress is now ready for its main installation, so access your domain.com, you will be redirected to the proper URL. Install WordPress, choose a password and username for authentication, choose a tagline and select the option for search engines.

Now, go to yourdomain.com/wp-login.php to access the admin area. Here you can install a theme from the default ones or your premium theme, some plugins, you can publish your first post.

Access yourdomain.com to see your new WordPress website!

How To Start a New Website

How To Start a New Website

Today I will be teaching you how to create a website on a new server. All the steps are pretty easy and here’s no room for misunderstanding. Let’s proceed with this nice tutorial, in seven easy to follow steps!

Step 1. Buy a hosting plan, the one that suits all your needs. Choose a shared plan, a Virtual Private Server (VPS), a cloud server, a dedicated machine, just the one that is perfect for your project. Having cPanel on a server is a big advantage, because you can work with the integrated File Manager, without having to use a ftp client. Also, cPanel offers tons of great options, so take this in consideration. Yes, most hosting companies add an additional fee for cPanel, but you can also find good ones with this admin as a bonus. Take your time, search on hosting review websites before choosing a host.

Step 2. Buy a domain name (yes, you can do that before buying the hosting plan). Choose your extension, depending on your location, target, brand. The domain name must be short, catchy, easy to keep in mind, with a term or expression searched a lot on searching engines like Google. Take your time, find a great domain! You could use Godaddy.com for this step.

Step 3. Create a pair of nameservers on your new server. The hosting company should give you all the info needed for this. Then update your registrar info with the new nameservers (easy to do this in Godaddy admin panel). The nameservers are there to make a connection between the domain name and the server.

Step 4. Assuming you have WHM cPanel, create a new package for your project. Name it as you wish. Create a new account, letting all privileges checked, selecting an unique or shared IP, an email client, options for nameservers (let them default here, the server will see the ones selected on your registrar). If no cPanel, use the admin panel offered by the hosting, it should include similar features.

Step 5. Create a new database to save all the important info in it. Make a new user and bind it with the database. cPanel has intuitive MySQL apps that will allow you to do this in seconds. If you have other admin, you should have there an option for databases. Give all privileges to the user.

Step 6. Upload a CMS on your server, in the HTML public directory. If you want to use WordPress, then upload the archive downloaded from WordPress.org and extract all the files in the HTML public directory. If you need other CMS like Drupal, Joomla, Magento, ZenCart, the exact thing is needed, but after this, binding the database with the CMS will not be the same. In WordPress, spot the config-sample.php, open it, insert the database name, user name, password in the brackets, save the file and then change its name to config.php. In other CMS, follow the steps mentioned in their installation process. If no cPanel here, use a ftp client, it’s almost the same thing.

Step 7. Access your installation URL to finalize the whole process. In WordPress, just access your domain.com, it will redirect you to the proper URL and the installation will be ready in seconds. For other CMS, follow the steps in their instructions. You should not have problems here.

You’re done. Your new website is live, ready to be customized with new themes or templates, to showcase great content or products.

Keep in touch. I will continue to publish easy tutorials, focusing on WordPress: how to install plugins, themes, how to make your own scripts, to optimize the whole website for SEO and so much more.
